Some studies also show that being African-American, Hispanic or Latino and over the age of 40 makes you more prone to this eye disease. Moreover, people with diabetes may suffer from an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy.

Visit Your Eye Doctor
Ideally, people should visit their eye doctors for a comprehensive eye exam at least every two years. This involves a series of procedures that allow optometrists to get an accurate picture of your current visual health and acuity. One of the most effective ways to assess your eye health is through a pupil dilation test. This type of eye exam can help detect signs of diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration and optic nerve damage.
To gauge color perception and eye muscle control, your eye doctor may administer a peripheral vision test. This allows the specialists to see if you would respond to visual therapy or other corrective treatments.
Eat Food With Eye-Friendly Nutrients
Your eyes, just like other parts of your body, require certain nutrients to be healthy. Green and yellow leafy vegetables and fruits are the main sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, two essential carotenoids, but they can also be found in egg yolks. Apart from lutein and zeaxanthin, Vitamin D, Vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids can also help reduce the risks of different eye problems.
